Martin has recently completed a training course so he can deliver the GLA:D program for osteoarthritis of the hip and knee. GLA:D stands for “Good Life with Arthritis in Denmark.” The program involves patients committing to small group (ideally three to five) classes of two education sessions and twelve exercise sessions over six weeks. The intention is for patients to continue the program independently after completion of the program. Weight loss is also encouraged when this a factor with referral to a dietician.
Thousands of people with osteoarthritis in Denmark have participated in the program with their results collated in a national data base. From these results we know participants experience less pain, have better physical function and a better quality of life. The program is currently being rolled out in Canada, Australia and China.
In circumstances whereby patients may ultimately require joint replacement surgery the program can also be beneficial as a “get fit” for surgery program.
